Happy clients bring more business. A happy client is one who feels his or her needs and wishes have been met. But we all know that often what people say makes them happy is not really what makes them happy, or as happy as they thought they would be. To ensure your own business success, it’s your job to know what it is your clients really want.
Of course, as a design professional you’re trained to walk your client through an extensive list of programming questions. The answers will help you understand your client’s needs and wants, priorities, project scope and budget. But what about their secret wish? What is it the client wants that they’re not telling you?
I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’ve talked with a lot of designers and their clients, and I can tell you that what today’s clients want most is more control over their projects. They want to feel that they’re in partnership with the designer and not part of some “mysterious” process where they don’t know what the designer is doing or thinking until they get the final result and the bill. The key to making your client happy is retaining your control while making the client feel that he or she has more control.
